Distinguished Show Merit (DSM)

Distinguished Show Merit (DSM)

What Is the DSM (Distinguished Show Merit)

The DSM, or Distinguished Show Merit, is one of the merit titles provided for under FIFe regulations, distinct from championship titles (CH, PR, IC, IP, GIC, GIP, SC, SP). Unlike championship titles, the DSM rewards consistent beauty over time, based on a long series of top-level results achieved at shows.

The title is reserved for adult cats, including neuters, competing in Classes 1–10 and Class 14.

How to Earn the Distinguished Show Merit Title (DSM)

The DSM can be earned by participating in FIFe International Shows. To obtain it, a cat must have won Best in Show (BIS) or Best Opposite Sex (BOS) at at least 10 different shows (10 total Bests, whether BIS or BOS).

The Minimum Time Period Required

Accumulating 10 Bests in a short time is not enough: the regulations require a minimum period of 2 years and one day between the first and the last Best obtained. This rule exists to prevent the title from being achieved too quickly, ensuring that the DSM truly reflects consistent beauty over time rather than a one-off result.

How to Apply for the DSM Title

Once the 10 Bests (BIS or BOS) have been achieved within the required minimum time period, the application process is as follows:

  1. Gather the full judging report copies for the 10 Bests obtained
  2. Send the copies to the GO (Genealogical Office)
  3. Submit a formal request for the title

Once approved, the DSM title is added after the cat's name in the LO (Pedigree Register).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the DSM a championship title like CH or IC?
No: the DSM is a merit title, separate from the championship path (CH, PR, IC, IP, GIC, GIP, SC, SP), and specifically rewards a cat's beauty as demonstrated over time.

Can neutered cats earn the DSM?
Yes, the DSM is open to adult cats including neuters, in Classes 1–10 and Class 14.

Is it enough to get 10 Bests in just a few weeks?
No: at least 2 years and one day must pass between the first and the last Best obtained.

What counts as a "Best" for DSM purposes?
Both Best in Show (BIS) and Best Opposite Sex (BOS) count toward the required total of 10 results.

How do I officially apply for the title once I've reached 10 Bests?
You need to send the full judging report copies to the GO (Genealogical Office), which will add the DSM title to the cat's name in the LO after verification.
