Characteristics of the Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is a strong, robust, and muscular cat, with an imposing appearance. The weight of a male can reach up to 13 kg (an average between 7 and 10 kg), while females usually range between 5 and 7 kg.

This breed has always been admired for its strength and beauty. Its coat is shiny, thick, and semi-long, silky to the touch and naturally water- and snow-resistant. The tail is long and bushy, and when extended it reaches at least up to the base of the neck.

The head is medium-sized and well-balanced with the body. The muzzle is square, with high cheekbones and a strong chin aligned with the nose and upper lip. The ears are large, wide at the base, tall on the head, well-spaced, and pointed, with tufts of hair inside and lynx-like tips. The eyes are large, slightly oval and oblique, and can come in several colors: green, yellow-green, bronze, odd-eyed, and—only in white cats—blue.

The body is rectangular in shape, with long, sturdy legs and well-furred toes, naturally adapted to prevent sinking in the snow.

Its voice is soft and delicate, quite different from the typical European Shorthair. For this reason, it is important to learn to understand its moods also through body language.

The average life expectancy of this breed is 13 to 17 years.

Temperament

The Maine Coon adapts well to living in an apartment, although it also enjoys outdoor spaces, which should always be made safe. Active and curious, it is a balanced and affectionate cat that loves being the center of attention, receiving cuddles, and playing.

It is patient and intelligent, gets along well with both children and other animals, and bonds more with its owner than with the home. However, it can suffer from loneliness if left alone for too many hours without the company of another pet.

Thanks to its dense fur, the Maine Coon is resistant to cold and rain. It is a skilled hunter, and despite its size, it possesses extraordinary agility typical of predators.

Like many strong and large animals, the Maine Coon is renowned for its gentle and good-natured temperament.

Being a natural breed, it is particularly rustic and hardy. Its care is simple, as it generally does not present special health problems, feeding difficulties, or issues with coat maintenance.
